Pick the gel when precision matters
A syringe puts a small amount beside a plumbing penetration, under a cabinet lip, behind a fixed appliance or straight into a crack. You can spread a dozen placements across one concentrated infestation without setting a station at every point.
Pick arenas where exposed gel is impractical
Syngenta names high humidity, dust, temperature extremes and locations nobody services often as the cases where the enclosed format holds up better. The two products also use different sugar and protein sources, which makes an arena worth trying when a population has stopped taking the gel.
How Advion Roach Gel Works
Indoxacarb does nothing until a cockroach eats it. That single fact explains both why the bait is slow and why it reaches insects you never see.
The first visit
A cockroach leaves its harborage on a normal foraging run, finds the gel and feeds. Nothing looks different yet, because indoxacarb produces no knockdown.
Within about 24 hours
Enzymes inside the insect convert indoxacarb into a more active metabolite. It blocks the voltage-dependent sodium channels the nervous system runs on. Feeding stops, coordination goes, and the cockroach dies.
The days after
German cockroaches consume fecal material, secretions and dead nestmates. Those habits move indoxacarb from the one insect that fed to others that never reached the gel.
The delay is the point
Syngenta calls the conversion step the MetaActive effect. A cockroach that dropped the instant it fed would never make it home, and the active ingredient would stop with that one insect.
A Purdue University laboratory study traced both secondary and tertiary mortality from indoxacarb bait. One bait-fed adult started a chain that killed 54 cockroaches under those conditions. The figure came out of a controlled experiment, so read it as evidence that transfer happens, not as a body count per dab of gel.
Common mistake
Do not spray over the bait
The label says not to put gel on surfaces recently treated with residual sprays, and not to apply residual sprays to surfaces where gel is already down.
A bait only works if a cockroach walks up and eats it. Pesticide residue on or around the placement can push the insect away from the one thing you need it to approach. If a spray is part of your program, keep it in different areas and follow both labels.
Which Roaches Advion Kills
German cockroaches
The small tan ones, about 1/2 to 5/8 inch long, with two dark stripes running back from the head. They live in kitchens, apartments and food-service spaces, reproduce quickly, and spend daylight hours packed into narrow cracks near food, warmth and moisture.
Gel is the format that reaches them. You can set a dab within an inch of the crack they came out of, and their habit of aggregating and feeding on each other does the rest.
American and other large cockroaches
Much bigger, and usually arriving from somewhere outside the room: drains, crawl spaces, sewers, utility areas or the yard. Finding the way in matters as much as treating what you see inside.
Treat the indoor harborages, then work the labeled outdoor entry points around the structure. One syringe covers a kitchen-centered German cockroach problem and a large roach coming in under a door.

Small placements beat one big one
The label favors several smaller applications over the same quantity piled into one or two spots. Every extra placement is another point where a foraging cockroach can run into bait on its normal route.
One syringe covers a lot of ground
Thirty grams works out to about 60 standard placements. Emptying a whole syringe into a single kitchen wastes most of it and does not speed anything up.
Look before you add more
Check the placements after a few days. Replace what got eaten or dried past the point of attracting anything. Adding fresh gel on a fixed schedule, without inspecting, just stacks product next to product.
The label on the package you receive takes precedence over anything written here. Using a pesticide in a manner inconsistent with its labeling is a violation of federal law, and permitted uses can differ by state or locality.
Where to Put Advion Gel
Placement decides whether the bait works. A cockroach will not cross an open floor for gel when food, water and shelter already sit along the protected edges of the room.
Kitchen
Behind and underneath the refrigerator, stove and dishwasher. Inside cabinet cracks, particularly at corners and along the underside of a cabinet lip. Around the plumbing under the sink, at pipe penetrations, and at openings that lead into wall or floor voids. Near where garbage is collected. Get down and look under the appliances rather than only around them, since German cockroaches sit in warm protected gaps that are invisible from standing height.
Bathrooms, laundry and utility rooms
Water supports cockroach activity even where there is almost nothing to eat. Check the plumbing under sinks, gaps where pipes pass through walls and floors, cabinet voids, and the junction where the wall meets the floor. Utility rooms add warmth and long stretches of space nobody disturbs. American and Oriental cockroaches turn up around drains and damp basements, so fixing a slow leak often does more than another dab of gel.
Outdoors
The label permits placements at cockroach entry and harborage points around a structure: gaps near doors and windows, construction joints, selected areas along exterior walls, and locations near sewers, garbage holding areas and trees that harbor cockroaches. Position outdoor bait where people and pets will not contact it, keep it away from anywhere runoff can carry pesticide into storm drains or surface water, and skip the application if rain is forecast within 24 hours.
Do not put gel here
- Countertops, tables and any other food-contact surface
- Anywhere routine cleaning will wipe it away
- Surfaces above roughly 120 to 130°F, such as ovens, grills, heat lamps and hot water pipes, because heat liquefies the bait
- Spots children or pets can easily reach
- On top of a surface that was recently treated with a residual spray

Do not treat areas that are easily accessible to children and pets. Keep the product out of reach of children. Avoid contact with skin, eyes or clothing, and wash thoroughly with soap and water after handling.

What the gel format gives you is control over where the product ends up. A 0.5 gram dab inside a crack behind a fixed cabinet is a very different exposure risk than a coated surface in the middle of a room. Bait arenas seal the bait inside plastic for the same reason, and that label still states plainly that children and pets must not be allowed to play with the stations.
In a labeled food or feed handling establishment, apply the gel only as a crack-and-crevice treatment. Keep it off food, utensils and processing surfaces, and off any food-preparation surface that gets washed on a routine basis, since cleaning removes the bait anyway. If gel reaches an exposed surface, scrape off what you can and wash the area with soap and water.
What to Expect After You Apply
Seeing a live cockroach the morning after treatment does not mean the bait failed.
The first days
Cockroaches have to find the gel and eat it first. Indoxacarb produces no knockdown, so an insect that already fed can keep walking for hours. That is the same property that carries the active ingredient back into the harborage.
Deaths usually start within about 24 hours of feeding. Some people see a burst of activity before that, because bait pulls insects out of hiding that were never visible before.
Judge it over weeks
How long a full treatment takes depends on the size of the population, the quality of the placements, how much competing food is around, and whether cockroaches keep arriving from a space you are not treating.
Put sticky monitors against the walls in the areas that were active, inspect the harborages you found, and watch whether the gel is still being eaten. Renew placements that were consumed or that stopped attracting anything.
If you live in an apartment
Treatment inside one unit cannot permanently clear a population living on the other side of the wall. German cockroaches move between adjoining apartments through structural gaps and utility penetrations, and University of Minnesota guidance points toward treating the infested unit together with the units next to it rather than retreating the same kitchen over and over. Bait inside your unit, close the entry points you can reach, and report building-wide activity to whoever manages the property.
Clear the competing food first
A grease deposit under the stove, crumbs inside a cabinet or a bowl of dog food left out overnight all compete with the bait. Wipe up spills, close the garbage, move dry food into sealed containers and pick up pet food at night. Fix the leaks you can reach. The goal is to make the gel one of the easiest meals in the room. Do not clean away the bait itself, which is one more reason to place it somewhere routine cleaning will not touch.

Advion Cockroach Gel Bait was first registered with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency on August 23, 2005. Two decades later, professional cockroach programs are still built around it.
